Sport Shorts The Bayview Rod & Gun Club is seeking members for its Junior Rifle League team. The team is open to ages 10-18 and competes in target shooting events throughout the state and region. The team meets on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the club’s facility on South Pine Street in Sayreville to train and practice. Team members are taught safe and correct use of firearms in addition to developing the concentration, discipline and sportsmanship necessary for tournament competition. The Kendall Park skating and hockey facility, Route 27 and New Road, is now accepting registrations its youth summer leagues set to begin July 12. Dwight Stones, a two-time Olympic bronze medalist and former world record holder in the high jump, will be among the world-class instructors participating in the On the Road Track and Field World Tour that will be making a stop at Lenape High School, Medford, July 8 and 9. This unique track and field camp is staffed exclusively by Olympians who will share their secrets to success with the campers. Joining Stones, the top-ranked high jumper in U.S. history, are the likes of Andre Phillips, Olympic champion in the 400-intermediate hurdles; Mike Tully, Olympic silver medalist and former world record holder in the pole vault; and Tom Petranoff, former record holder in the javelin and a two-time silver medalist at the World Championships. The New Jersey Historical Society, 52 Park Place, Newark, is currently presenting the exhibition "Pride of Newark: Baseball’s Bears and Eagles" which explores the two teams, their players, their fans and the Newark of their time. The exhibit will be on display free of charge five days a week, Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Using video and sound effects as well as photographs, vintage film and audio, the exhibit will examine baseball’s golden years in Newark during the 1930s and ’40s. Old Rupper Stadium, the Ironbound baseball arena of its day, will be used as an entry into life in the city at that time. The Eagles were Newark’s entry in the National Negro League while the Bears were one of the legendary teams in the International Minor League. The second annual MacKenzie Farrell Golf Classic will be held on July 24 at the Knob Hill Golf Club in Manalapan. Colts Neck High School boys basketball coach Lou Piccola will direct the 2000 Cougar Basketball Camp at Colts Neck High School. The camp is for boys and girls ages 7-14 and will run daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be three camps, July 10-14 for girls, and July 17-21 and July 24-28 for boys. The primary emphasis of the camp is the development of fundamental skills through group and individual instruction and game experience. A complete staff of high school coaches and players with camp experience will instruct the campers through group lectures, small group drills and fundamental stations. Piccola coached the Xaverian (N.Y.) High School varsity basketball team for 16 years. He won two New York State Class State Championships. His 1981 Class A State Championship win was led by Chris Mullin, who went on to star at St. John’s University and in the NBA, where, as a member of the Indiana Pacers, he helped win the Eastern Conference Championship and played for the NBA title this year.
