      No. Brunswick presents awards to students in town

      Maya Williams Maya Williams NORTH BRUNSWICK - Several residents were honored with proclamations at the Jan. 12 Township Council meeting.

      Maya Williams, 19, has been named Miss Black New Jersey 2009. The pageant and scholarship foundation was founded in 1986 to advance educational and professional opportunities for women of African-American descent.

      Williams is a student at Spelman College in Atlanta, studying economics as a major and management and organization and dance as a double minor. She is the acting treasurer and co-social chair for Spelman's Ester's Circle Christian ministry, and is part of the leadership team for Spelman's Economic Empowerment Initiative, which promotes financial literacy to college students.

      Williams is also a member of various dance groups and is a choreographer for Christian Actors & Entertainers Development Corporation.

      Rachel Druker was named a scholar award recipient.

      Druker is a junior at the North Brunswick Township High School and is an honor roll student.

      Rachel Druker Rachel Druker She has been volunteering since age 6, and helped created the Butterfly Garden at the North Brunswick Community Park. She is also a member of the Drama Club, the mock trial team and the North Brunswick Abilities Council.

      She is also an employee of the Board of Education, working the lighting and sound equipment at the high school auditorium.

      Druker is also a Girl Scout, and her Gold award candidacy focuses on spreading awareness about the dangers of smoking.

      Kruthika Vetriselvan was also named a Scholar Athlete / Artist for January.

      The Parsons Elementary School fifth-grader is a high honor roll student, a competitor in the Math Olympiad and a recipient of the school's Mark of Excellence.

      She has been in the chorus since the fourth grade and plays the flute as part of her school band.

      Vetriselvan has also played recreational and travel soccer in North Brunswick, currently takes swimming lessons and is interested in a career in Journalism.

      In addition, the mayor administered the oath of office to Public Safety Director Kenneth McCormick and to Chief Financial Officer Kalamani Sriranganathan.
